The afternoon of November 3, 2024, my wife and I strolled along Lake Anna as we often do. We immediately noticed an algal bloom on the water. This is about the same time as the bloom occurred last year.
I took photos and reported it to the OEPA per protocol. Took them a bit to get back to me with the response that the lake is private and will not take action but provided me with another link to report through another agency and I did that. Have not heard anything to the time of this post.
Last year when I reported to the EPA, signs around the lake soon went up speaking to the possible hazards of certain algal blooms, this year nothing. I have returned to the lake and documented what is growing in the lake. We do not know if the waters have been tested, if it is safe for pets or kids. No information out to the public and so here I post.
Why the post? There is an algal bloom on Lake Anna, blooms like this are very common and often harmful to those using the water. Has the water been tested and is this a harmful or innocuous bloom? Is it safe to fish, play or dive into the water? Scroll through the pics to see the progression.
Lake Anna update from City of Barberton…
Algal blooms have become more noticeable in Ohio’s lakes, streams and rivers during the last few years. Although most blooms are green algae and not harmful, there are some that are actually a type of cyanobacteria that have the ability to produce toxins – called harmful algal blooms (HABs).
